Lions Football Club merged with Gibraltar United Football Club in 2011 to form Lions Gibraltar Football Club. Lions FC had been relegated to the 2nd Division in the early 2000’s and had struggled to challenge for promotion back to the top flight. Their established youth setup was being exploited by top clubs, with Lions powerless to stop their players moving to top division clubs. Gibraltar United were an established Premier Division side having won numerous leagues and cups in their illustrious history. However at the end of the 2010/11 season, it was decided that the current senior squad setup would disband, leaving the club with no players. It was then decided to merge both clubs to form the present Lions Gibraltar Football Club. With the club now established in the Premier Division, they can offer the top youngsters the possibility to play in the local top flight.

The current Lions Gibraltar FC (LGFC) squad is by far the youngest and most prospective team in the Premier Division with an average squad age of 21. Having had a great start to the season where the club sat at the top of the league table for the first time in the club’s history, these young guns are not to be pushed aside.

They are a team play which plays with a no fear approach and who like to pass the ball about when the opportunity arises. The added experience in midfield through combative midfielder Jansen Dalli and the technical ability of Nick Thompson and Argentinian Emilio Sansolini, Lions like to play football that is very easy on the eye. They also have the ability of applying a fast and direct style of football with emphasis on incorporating pace on the flanks and up top.

At present, LGFC have embarked on a ten year project with the aim of enhancing the club’s strategy in promoting the game of football at club level in Gibraltar. LGFC are proud to have ten youth teams ranging from U7’s to U15’s and three senior teams. LGFC see the connection between players as a vital club belief.

With the likes of hot prospects and youth internatioanls Bradley Banda, Jayce Olivero, Shaun De Los Santos and Jules Origo, getting regular glimpses of Premier football, these boys could become a side battling for the title in the future.
